IT'S HERE, IT'S HERE!!

Finally, the new 2012-2013 Catalogue from Stampin' Up! goes live at 2 pm ET ... TODAY!! Yep, it's a whole month early, part of Stampin' Up!'s changes to their catalogue program, and I LOVE IT!

The catalogue is crisp, bright, organized, and has lots of close-up photos, especially in the Accessories Section, so we can see exactly what each ribbon, button and brad looks like - full marks to Stampin' Up! for giving us a GREAT catalogue!

There are lots of new stamps, plus Designer Series Papers, punches, and new and improved tools (like a heat tool with TWO SETTINGS!) ... and the ribbons and embellies are too scrumptious for words. I'm an accessories junkie, in case you didin't know, lol. I always turn to that part of the catalogue first.

The hostess stamps, etc are in the back of the catalogue now, and all the stamps are now available in clear and wood (except the A La Carte individual stamps and some of the big background stamps - they're still in wood only)

Ok, so how can you see the catalogue TODAY? I'll be posting a link here on this blog which will lead you to an online version just as soon as 2 pm gets here ... then you can browse, make lists, and shop to your heart's content .. that's what I'll be doing this week <wink>

Digital Brayering Technique by Julie Leblanc

Hey folks, if you are into digital scrapbooking or card-making at all, and especially if you use Stampin' Up!'s "MY DIGITAL STUDIO" software, please check out my team mate Julie Leblanc's new video on how to achieve a brayered background effect on your computer .. I'm so proud of her and want her to be known as the creator of this technique (at least in the Stampin' Up! world) because I've never seen this method used anywhere else:

 

NEW OCCASIONS MINI CATALOGUE IS HERE!

I've had my hands on a single copy of the new Occasions Mini catalogue from Stampin' Up! since before Christmas, but of course I couldn't share it here online with you all until it actually started ..... and thank goodness, today's the day I get to spill the beans (I'm so terrible at keeping secrets when they're REALLY GOOD ONES like this, lol)

 

There are sooooo many new tools for the Big Shot in this mini ... including new thin dies that nest together so you can cut and mat with ease (just like Nestabilities, but these are designed FOR the Sizzix Big Shot!) Then there's the new Large Sizzlit die ... it cuts a 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" paper doily in any patterned paper or coloured cardstock you want!

Oooh, and we now carry Sizzix Edgelet dies and co-ordinating embossing folders to really make the edges of your cards, tags and pages POP!

Then there's all the very kewl stuff for Valentines Day ... Blushing Bride smooch spritz, scratch & sniff embossing powder, ready-to-stamp cards with intricate laser-cut hears on the front, Dazzling Diamonds in Cherry Cobbler, and BEAUTIFUL new Valentine stamp sets!

A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT...

That's an old saying my father used to say whenever someone didn't follow through on a promise and he had to hire someone else to do the work .... I used it with my kids too, but usually to say that they were too late with their chores so I did the work myself and kept their allowance (what a meanie I was!)

Today I use this old phrase with you to acknowledge that I dropped the ball yesterday - I DIDN'T send out the first of 12 Holiday Helper emails as promised, and I DIDN'T let you all know about Stampin' Up!'s pre-holiday ONLINE EXTRAVAGANZA SALE which started yesterday - that was extra-bad of me because one of the items on sale was available only for the first 24 hours - phooey! I was totally out of commission due to a whopper of a migraine that conveniently started at the end of the Baby & Bump show on Sunday and finally faded away late last night. I remember all too much of Sunday night - being awake and in pain for most of it, but I really can't remember much about yesterday - I slept, medicated, drank water - then repeated the cycle all day long.

WHAT A WHIRLWIND

The wind has been blowing leaves all around our house for the past week & the trees are almost bare, but at least the sun is finally shining today! This week's activities will be a whirlwind too ... I'm not quite over my cold but there's no more time to nurse it ... my inks, stamps and papers are calling to me, lol!

Tonight in Guelph I'm running my PAPER MEDALLION WREATH CLASS (aka lolly wreath) and we have room for a couple more folk. If you'd like to join the fun, just shoot me a quick email or phone call! And the grand finale of this whirlwind week will be the ALS SCRAPBOOK DAY OUT in Guelph on Saturday, October 22nd from ... are you ready for this ... 9 am til midnight!!!! (Yes, hubby & I will be staying in a hotel room in town afterwards) This event is raising money for a friend's mom who was recently diagnosed with ALS and will need a lot of specialized equipment down the road. The organizers have invited several vendors to be on hand, and have gathered some AMAZING prizes to raffle off throughout the day! I will have my Stampin' Up! booth there all day and night, with a try-it-out table, retired stuff for sale, AND I will personally be scrapbooking with MY DIGITAL STUDIO - you can watch along on the monitor! I'm donating 20% of all retired stuff sales and 10% of all catalogue sales that I make on the 22nd. WANTED: COPYWRITER

I'm sure there's a famous quote out there that makes the point better than I - but I figure a smart person is someone who admits they can't do it all on their own and seeks help from skilled people to reach their goals.

I'm ready to admit that I need help! Hey, not THAT kind of help, although that might be a good idea at some point too! <grin>

I'm looking for someone with hands-on paper crafting experience who excels at writing clear, concise instructions in English using "My Digital Studio" or similar digital designing software. As a bonus, but not a deal breaker: the ideal candidate is already familiar with Stampin' Up! products.

Working from home with reliable internet access so we can communicate/send files back & forth is a must.

Payment is negotiable but I'm not rich by any means, so if you are an established, professional copywriter I probably can't afford you.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE WONDERFUL

THE BAD: So if you follow/like/fan my Facebook Page (Stamping & Scrapping with Donna) you already know that I didn't make it to my Leadership Conference in Nashville this week after all. Family stuff was piling up and we decided this just wasn't the right time for a trip out of the country. Gotta be honest here - that was a VERY difficult decision to make!  : (

THE GOOD: Instead of moping around the studio tonight, picturing all my travel buddies having a grand time at Stampin' Up!'s wrap up party tonight (stamping, demos, food, music; you get the picture - sigh) I've called my downline Julie right here in Guelph and asked if I can crash her class tonight .. she graciously said yes and suddenly the day seems a little bit brighter - I get to stamp with good friends after all! We're making a desktop calendar tonight and yes, I WILL post pictures from the class!

THE WONDERFUL: Speaking of desktop calendars, I realized this morning that I never did show you what I made for hubby's stocking gift! Using My Digital Studio and Stampin' Up!'s new desktop calendar template and photos of our visit last summer to New Brunswick's Botanical Gardens, here's what I came up with:

I had the calendar printed through Stampin' Up!'s professional printing service, and I am really impressed with the quality of materials used - the spine and easel are very strong, and the card stock is a semi gloss that will stand up to finger prints, etc throughout the year. Plus, it folds flat for mailing!

To make the titles pop on the cover, I used a digital image of the Modern Label Punch, then I just adjusted the size and opacity of the punch and placed it behind my text boxes.

The template comes with the monthly titles and dates (I really like the font they used this year!) I added a photo behind the month & weekdays, then I slid the opacity scale up and down until I could read the words easily without the photo interfering. As a final step, I added a white strip as a top layer just below the month  - gives it a little pizazz, don't you think?

While the calendar is facing hubby on his desk, everyone walking up to him will see a coordinating photo facing them.

I wanted to use really bright and cheery photos for January's page. And it's so easy to put a photo inside a photo - it took only a few seconds! I dragged my first photo into place so that it would cover the whole page, then I placed a smaller photo in the corner, clicked on "add mat", changed the default mat colour from basic black to whisper white and presto!

All in all, I think the project only took me an hour, and most of that was deciding which photos I would use in each month. I experimented a bit and clicked on the "undo" arrow a few dozen times until I liked what I saw. Then it was "send to publisher", enter my credit card number and I was done.

 

Here's March, front and back views (I thought this photo was perfect for St. Patrick's Day!)

I'm pleased with the way this calendar turned out, and now we have a constant reminder of the wonderful day we spent roaming this beautiful park with our cameras ... that's a favourite pastime of ours.

(Even if hubby doesn't believe it, all of the photos in this calendar were actually taken by me ... not by the professional in the family!)

Hmm, I wonder if we'll still be taking so many nature photos once our first grandbaby arrives in the spring ... probably not, lol!

DEC 15: CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN

Guess what ... I have another matchbox card to show you today - I told you it's a versatile project! <grin>

Brenda H had to mail us her swaps all the way from Ottawa (I'm thinking of you gals up there with all the snow you've been getting!!) You may not be able to see by the photo, but the Confetti Cream card front has been embossed using the Sizzix Big Shot and one of Stampin" Up!'s Sizzix Texturz Templates ... or is it an embossing folder? I'm too eager to see what's inside to stop and look it up in my catalogue, lol. The ornament punches are hung with Stampin' Up!'s Linen Thread, and there's some Old Olive Super Nova Stampin' Glitter on one ornament to give it the finishing touch.

Brenda made her matchbook card a little bigger than Karen's from yesterday. Why? Well, to hold a CD, of course! Brenda decorated a CD label with a cute snowman, lots of flakes and a greeting - now I'm not sure if she stamped the labels by hand and coloured them in or if she used the new digital CD Label template that Stampin' Up! just released for MY DIGITAL STUDIO .. I'll have to ask her!

At first I thought the CD was an ornament ... I checked the back; nope, no decorations there ... so for the heck of it I popped it into my computer and ....

Christmas music!!! Wahoo!!! I'm listening right now to a selection of Brenda's favourite carols by Aretha Franklin, Faith Hill, and a whole range of different artists - how kewl is that?!!! Thank you so much, Brenda!!

I'm getting really excited for Christmas now - can't wait to see what the next swap surprise brings! I'll meet you back here tomorrow and we'll open it together, ok?

TIME KEEPS ON SLIPPIN' AWAY

I haven't posted since the 17th? Shame on me!

To my credit, I've been doing a lot of New Demonstrator Training Sessions this month, plus all my regular classes and clubs ... oh and I had an EXCELLENT time at a workshop for Josie & Jenny and their family and friends - I  can't wait to do it all again in November with that fun bunch of stampers!

To my DIS-credit, I musn't ever let my live studio stuff get in the way of posting to my cyber friends - that's just not right!

OK, so here's a recap of what's what ...

Hubby & I have decided to sell our big house in the Spring (I mean really, 4 bathrooms for just the two of us? Can you say ... excessive?) We're still staying in the same town, so no worries for my stampin' buddies; I'm not LEAVING you, and I'm definitely NOT quitting Stampin' Up!<grin>

I'm excited about this decision 'cause it gives me the perfect opportunity to pare down my "stuff" - stamping AND otherwise - because we won't have as much space to clutter in a condo or apartment. I'm thinking the housework will be much more manageable in a smaller place, too - giving me more time to stamp!

In the meantime, we keep looking at places for sale in the city, and hubby is searching for a cottage in PEI that we can visit every summer and eventually (maybe) retire to in about a ga-zillion years from now.

Here's another little project that's been keeping me busy this month ...

Hubby & I are silk-screening T-Shirts for all the demonstrators on my team who are going to the Stampin' Up! Regionals this Saturday in Hamilton.

This is the logo I designed with My Digital Studio - but you'll have to imagine a small red maple leaf inside the heart ... Michaels was all out of red ink for my YuDu machine (very sad about that). But I'm very excited that 17 of us will all be there in matching shirts - I must get a picture on Saturday of the whole gang & Stampin' Up!'s founder, Shelli Gardner, to share with all of you here on the blog.

Ohhh, gotta go ... Kathy just got here for an afternoon of stamping - poor thing, all her supplies are packed away while they build their new house and she's in a creative withdrawl!

THE TROUBLE WITH DIGITAL PHOTOS ...

... is that they're so easy to take that we snap waaaaaayyyyy more of them than we really need! Next thing you know, your computer is overrun with the good, the bad and the just plain ugly, lol.

Tips for organizing your digital photos

Digital photos provide a fast, easy way for us to revisit our favorite memories. However, if your digital photos are clustered randomly on your computer's desktop or in your image library, they will be much harder to browse through, locate, and enjoy. We'll show you simple ways to organize your digital photos for easy image searching and sharing.

Thin your photos
The first step in organizing your digital photo collection is eliminating all of your unwanted pictures (such as shots with your thumb over the lens). You can also save time by deleting photos from your camera's memory card before downloading to your PC.

Create descriptive folders
You can still keep things organized by creating digital photo folders:

• There are many different ways to organize a folder system. One efficient method is to organize your folders by year, and then create subfolders for each month.
• You could also organize your folders by season (for example Summer '09) and use important events as subfolders.
• No matter which way you decide to arrange and label your folders, remember that consistency is key.

Use inspiration as a starting point
If you find yourself overwhelmed by the number of photos you have to sort through, pick a photo theme or a series of pictures that inspire you, and use that as a starting point for organizing your images. Here are a few examples to get you started:

• Family baby pictures
  Create a special album dedicated to all the members of your family when they were young. Or, use the birth of a new member as the inspiration to start organizing.
• Top-ten
  Think of a top–ten theme, such as top–ten favorite concerts or top–ten scenic photos, and make folders for all your top shots.
• Travel photos
  Comb your photo library for pictures of the places close to your heart.

Tips for naming your photo files
There are a few key things to remember when naming your photo files to ensure easy image searching:

• Use descriptive file names. Who would recall that HPIM0007.JPG is their favorite shot of the kids from a family vacation to Paris?
• Add details in the title for easy retrieval later on. For instance, use Eiffel_tower_2007.jpg rather than Vacation_2007.jpg.
• Name your photos immediately after you download them, or you may be left with folders full of obscure numerical file names, such as Untitled_0264.jpg.

After your photos are organized
Once your pictures are organized, you'll be inspired to view, print, and show them off.

STAMP-4-FUN WITH THE ARTFUL*iNKERS

When this post hits the web, I will be smack in the middle of my favourite way to spend a Saturday ...  stampin' with my fabulous team of demonstrators, the ARTFUL*iNKERS and invited guests.

Sure, we get together every month to chat about business stuff, but once each quarter I host a just-for-fun day of stamping, displays and demonstrations - it really helps us all remember what we love about crafting and why we joined Stampin' Up! in the first place!

Today we're exploring using textiles on the Big Shot die cutting machine and turning our scraps of card stock into cute punch art creations. I'll show you our projects soon, but for today I thought I'd share some of the treats I've made for everyone attending...

This has to be the EASIEST Valentine treat ever! I made 30 or so and swapped them at Leadership earlier this month ... then I sat down and made another couple of dozen for the gals at today's event. (Actually, I can't lie - my good pal Julie came over and helped cut the pieces out on the Big Shot and punched the pink hearts with the Full Heart punch ... but I supervised!)

Inside I've tucked a wrapped Peppermint Patty and the instructions to make more - I got five of these candy covers from one sheet of 8-1/2 x 11" card stock, so it's very frugal, too.  <wink>  Here's a close up:

SUPPLILES:

• Two Tags die & Big Shot die cutting machine
• Scalloped Heart of Hearts Embosslit die
• Full Heart punch
• 1/4" Chocolate Chip grosgrain ribbon
• Sending Love Specialty Designer Series Paper

Then, for my three pals who agreed to demonstrate today, I burned each of them a CD of my Leadership photos & made a quick label for the cardboard cover using MY DIGITAL STUDIO - I've been using that software for everything BUT scrapbooking so far, lol!

• Scallop Square die & Big Shot die cutting machine
• MDS images: star punch (x3, 2 are resized smaller and coloured in Kraft, the third is original size in Not Quite Navy), and stitched edge in chocolate chip on all four sides.

DIGITAL NIGHT AND DAY

OK, I know I promised on yesterday's post to return today to share a couple of tricks I did on the stair step card ... but I had two "Mom & Me' classes today and I'm EXHAUSTED! Don't get me wrong; I absolutely LOVE stamping with the kids and moms .. it's probably the most relaxed stamping class I run! But I think I'm still a bit under the weather 'cause I keep nodding off at the computer, lol.

So here's Plan B: I WILL post the tricks using the blender pen and the punch on MONDAY, and for today I thought I'd quickly share an 8-1/2 x 11 scrapbook page I created using Stampin' Up!'s "My Digital Studio" software, the newest uber-easy, super-fun way to be creative! (Yeah, I'm hooked on digi-designing now, thanks to MDS).

I plan to add an old black & white picture of my grandparents in the white area, but I couldn't wait to show you the page, so you'll have to imagine it with a photo.

ANNIVERSARY PRESENTS..

It's anniversary #33 for hubby and I; I spent it in bed with a cold while my better half worked all day. Really romantic, eh?

Thankfully I felt well enuf tonight to get up ... we're spending a quiet evening in front of the tv and exchanging home made presents - I never thought he'd go for the "make it ourselves" idea, but I was really surprised to receive two of my favourite photos together in a frame. (I love all of his photos, but I didn't think he paid any attention when I was admiring these two several weeks ago.) Huh, after all these years, he can still surprise me!

In return, I used all MY photos from our road trip last year to make him a 2010 calendar with My Digital Studio - it was so easy! I had it printed through Stampin' Up's printing service and it really turned out well. Here are a few of the pages ...

The circle of words is a stamped image that I made larger, then I layered it under the photo to hide the bottom half of the phrase because it didn't suit the layout.

I matted all of the photos in "Basic Grey" and made all of the stamped images and journalling text in "Brocade Blue" throughout the calendar to give it continuity.

I used the Opacity feature to lighten the stamped images wherever the journalling overlapped, so that the words could still be read easily.

EASY BREEZY CARD CHALLENGE .. DIGITALLY!

Well, if you follow me here, you must realize by now that I've fallen WAAAYYY behind with my entries to Julie's "Easy Breezy Kewl Colour Challenges" ... I DID have a perfect record of entering every one of her challenges since the beginning, but alas, real life got in the way of my fun and I missed the entire month of October (possibly more).

I'm happy to say that I'm back on track with EBKCC #10 ... AND I designed my entry using MY DIGITAL STUDIO, Stampin' Up!'s new digital designing software. What do you think of it?

The saying is one from my 2009 Holiday Helper, issue #1, and was written in a text box with a misc font from my computer. That's one thing I really LOVE about My Digital Studio - I can use any font I have on my computer ... and I have quite a few! (Can you say font-a-holic?)

MY FIRST CARD ON MDS

As part of the program to become a Certified Demonstrator in My Digital Studio, Stampin' Up! requires me to create a greeting card and have it printed through their professional printing service. So today, I tackled this enjoyable task & came up with two cards ...

My first attempt was based on the card sample on page 32 of Stampin' Up!'s 2009-2010 Catalogue & Idea Book, except that I had to substitute another stamp image because Season of Joy doesn't come with the software. (I would imagine that it will be offered as a future download; it's a very popular set!)

I love that the software comes with many of my favourite Designer Series papers and Simply Scrappin' Kits. I added a tree border, a grosgrain ribbon and knot, a large oval punch & greeting, and I even managed to change the colours on many of the items to get the look I wanted.

The best feature is the ability to add a drop shadow - look closely to the right of the trees, the ribbon and the punched greeting. I had to resist the urge to put a drop shadow on EVERYTHING!

The first card was fun & easy to do, but not really my style. So for my second attempt (and the one I eventually sent to Stampin' Up! to be printed) I wanted a more eclectic look...

What do you think?

I LOVE the stitching options (they're actually stamp images), the staples, the border stamps (you won't find this swirly border in any catalogue!), and the ability to change the opacity of an image - both the border and splotch are done in Not Quite Navy, but I toned down the opacity of the splotch to about 50% so that the butterfly would stand out against it.

Adding the torn edges and the stitching to my layer of Dusty Durango card stock took some fiddling, but the next time I'm sure it will be easier to do.

While I'm waiting for my professionally printed card to arrive in the mail, I think I'll also try printing this one on my home computer and use it to cover a spiral notebook - a girl can never have too many of those around!
